Precautions Handling Asbestos

Traces of asbestos can be found in old properties and usually it is left untouched because if you don't bother it, it won't bother you. Only when, it is disturbed it becomes a danger to you. So, if possible try to leave it on its own.

As a rule, it should be specified in the property report if there are particular areas in the property where this material could be found. If for some reason, the property report does not specify anything in particular then it is necessary to call out professionals who can carry out your property's survey.

If it is present in those areas that are hardly used like the loft or store room then you don't need to take any further actions. But, if it’s present in your kitchen or other areas with high traffic then it is better to assess whether the presence of asbestos is risking your health or not. It was used as a key insulation material because of its fire resistant nature so it is likely you will find its traces in the roof line.

Those property areas that are frequently used, should be free of this material as it can release fumes and over time your health will be adversely affected. Therefore, get it removed completely by a professional who will first assess the nature of the problem and based on his finding, he will then come up with a suitable removal process.

Similarly, if you have to carry out any renovation or repair works, you need to ensure that the area you're working on does not contain asbestos and if there are any traces, you need to get it removed first because otherwise you cannot carry out with the repair because you would be damaging your health in return. Never risk your life and always take the necessary precautions.

You cannot smell it or feel its presence but it can be fatal if mishandled. Whereas, if it is left untouched, it won't do you any harm at all and you can carry out with your life without any worries.

You should never try to handle it on your own. Always call in for professional help because by law, you are required to hire a licensed asbestos removal company as they are familiar with all the necessary precautions they need to take prior to the removal process.
