Pendulum Floor Test Explained

A pendulum test is one of the methods used for testing the slip resistance of a floor. This is the only method that is recognised by the UK courts in the event of slip accidents. This slip resistance test shows whether the floor is dangerous or safe.

In case the test deems the floor as dangerous, it is important to apply a non-slip coating or carry out anti-slip treatments. This test must be carried out periodically, especially by business owners to make sure that the floor is safe for the employees, clients, staff, customers and the public. In order for the floor to be deemed as fit, the PTV score must be 36 or more.

What is involved in a pendulum test?

The test comprises of the pendulum swinging across the surface of the floor. The steps are as follows:

The machine is zeroed to make sure that the reading is accurate

The pendulum is swung across the floor and the reading is measured. The swinging of the pendulum is carried out 3 times and then, 5 more times. The average reading of the last 5 swings determines the PTV.

The test is performed two more times with the floor in different directions so that the slip resistance across the entire floor area can be ascertained.

Once the test has been done with a dry floor area, the same will be repeated by applying water to the floor surface. The same process is repeated to determine a PTV.

So, if you have not conducted this test to determine the safety of your floor, you must immediately call a professional.
